The Australian Reptile Park’s Kids 2 Keeper programme aims at providing an intense and very hands on experience for people aged 13-18 years and involves as many aspects of zoo keeping that we can pack into one day!
The day begins with a general overview of the role and responsibilities of a Zoo Keeper, an outline of the day ahead, a behind the scenes tour of the Park and information about the animals the kids will be working with throughout the day.
Kids will be shown correct animal handling skills and will have the chance to handle animals such as snakes, lizards, frogs, alligators, birds and mammals.
They’ll learn some of the many other aspects of zoo keeping such as hygiene routines, standard operating procedures regarding animal feeding and enclosure servicing, animal enrichment, enclosure design and the renovation/construction of current exhibit projects.
At the conclusion of the day and with the guidance and supervision of keepers, each participant will present an animal at the Keeper Kids show to the other students in the program and public visitors.
Suitable clothing and footwear must be worn on the day.
The cost of K2K day is $105.00 (GST inclusive) per child and includes Park entry, morning tea and lunch, and a Certificate of Survival.
- Each K2K day has very limited numbers and is capped at *16 students per group, one group per day.
- A minimum of 4 participants must be booked for K2K to go ahead. If there is less than 4 participants booked, K2K may be postponed to a later date.
