Craig Adams is the former Operations Manager for the Australian Reptile Park and managed the park’s Snake and Spider Venom Program for almost a decade. Part of Craig’s responsibilities was the Park’s Occupational Health and Safety portfolio and Craig has been highly trained in snake and spider identification and emergency procedures for bites.

An expert in his field, Craig has confidently delivered the Park’s safety awareness message to a wide audience through countless educational talks and seminars. Along with his wife Jackie, he has starred in numerous television, print media and documentary films as he has searched for Australia’s most venomous creatures. Craig has also participated in numerous field trips to remote areas of Australia to collect rare and endangered snakes for scientific research, conservation and breeding programs, as well as re-stocking the Park’s life-saving Venom Program.  The Australian Reptile Park is the sole supplier of snake and spider venoms for the nation’s anti-venom program – a tradition that has been in place for over 50 years.

Craig is now presenting the Reptile Park’s Safety Awareness Program to the broader community to advise and train on Australia’s venomous species, how to prevent possible injury and what to do if an incident occurs.

Each seminar involves a 2 - 3 hour discussion on different types of snakes, lizards and spiders, including:

• Assessment of a specific site and advice on possible risk areas (if required)
• Habitats
• Behaviour
• Camouflage techniques
• How they hunt
• How they react to disturbance and defensive responses
• Breeding and other peak activity periods
• What to do if confronted by an angry snake
• What to do if bitten – first aid techniques
• What happens if you get bitten?
• Live snakes

The Australian Reptile Park is the sole provider of raw venom from spiders and snakes for the nation’s anti-venom program, assisting in saving approximately 300 lives annually.
