“As we welcome Artemis II back from its successful lunar mission, we want to introduce Artemis, the newest koala joey" - Operations Manager Brandon Gifford

The joey has been named Artemis, inspired by the Artemis II space mission, drawing a parallel between the spacecraft’s journey and the joey’s own first steps into the world.

Operations Manager Brandon Gifford said the timing of the sighting made the moment even more special.

The six-month-old joey, which has grown from the size of a jellybean, made its debut just as the mission returned to Earth, creating a moment that felt perfectly aligned.

“I was doing some maintenance on the koala yards when I looked up and saw the cutest little head sticking out of the pouch with tiny ears and a massive nose,” Brandon said.

“After tracking the mission very closely and being a massive fan, I couldn’t think of a better name for this joey.”

Artemis is part of the Australian Reptile Park’s koala breeding program, which plays a critical role in protecting the future of the endangered species. With koalas facing increasing threats from habitat loss, disease, and climate change, each new joey represents an important step forward for conservation.

The Park follows a naming tradition where joeys share the same first letter as their mum. In this case, mum Ariel made Artemis a natural fit, while also reflecting a major moment in space exploration.

“Artemis has launched out of the pouch and is taking its first look into the great unknown, just like the astronauts have been doing this week,” Brandon said.

The Australian Reptile Park expects more joeys to emerge in the coming months and plans to continue the space-themed naming trend as each new arrival begins its own journey.

For now, Artemis is capturing hearts as a tiny joey taking its first look at the world beyond the pouch.
