Australia’s latest heatwave has everyone searching for ways to cool down and that includes the animals (and keepers!) at the Australian Reptile Park. As temperatures climbed, our team rolled out the ultimate summer survival plan: icy treats, misty showers and, of course, a some very popular kiddy pools.
One of the standout moments came courtesy of Jockey, our impressive 3.7 metre Burmese python, who enjoyed a relaxing dip in a brightly coloured pool. He wasn’t alone either. Operations Manager Brandon Gifford jumped in, sunnies on, drink in hand alongside Jockey and a juvenile reticulated python for what might be the most unexpected pool party of the season.
The snakes absolutely loved it. Water play is fantastic enrichment for them, helping them stay cool and active during extreme heat. And as Brandon put it, when you’re already filling a kiddy pool for two giant snakes, you may as well join the fun.
Across the Park, water misters and showers were switched on to create refreshing micro-climates for everyone. Koalas happily fluffed up under the mist, tawny frogmouths stretched their wings to catch the cool droplets, and the cassowary confidently strutted through its very own rainforest spritz. Tasmanian devils went treasure hunting through ice for hidden treats, while visiting kids treated every sprinkler like a mini water park.
Then there was Estrella, our much-loved Galápagos tortoise, who seemed to reach peak relaxation as the gentle spray washed over her shell. Calm, still and completely blissed out, she reminded us all how good a proper cool-down can feel.
Through the hottest days, our keepers continue working hard to make sure every animal stays comfortable, enriched and thriving. If you’re visiting during the school holidays, expect plenty of fun, refreshing moments for both our animals and the humans enjoying the summer alongside them
