Our Komodo Dragons Have Successfully Paired!

Date Published: July 7, 2025

There’s romance in the air—of the reptilian kind—at the Australian Reptile Park! The Park is buzzing with excitement after a nail-biting but ultimately successful reunion between its resident Komodo dragons, Kraken and Daenerys. For the second time, these modern-day dinosaurs have mated, an achievement that’s as monumental as it is risky.

Keepers were understandably tense ahead of the encounter. Komodo dragons aren’t exactly known for their charm and cuddles. In fact, they’re among the most dangerous reptiles on Earth, growing up to four metres long, weighing over 100 kilograms, and equipped with a venomous bite that can take down prey, and potentially each other. Even with a successful first breeding in 2021 (a historic moment that resulted in the first-ever Komodo hatchlings born in Australia), the team knew anything could happen.

But Kraken and Daenerys had other plans.

“I couldn’t believe how easy it was,” said Brandon Gifford, Operations Manager at the Park. “There was definitely a bit of posturing at the start, but it was like they remembered each other. It felt almost… affectionate, which is not something you usually say about Komodo dragons!”

The pair quickly settled and successful copulation was observed multiple times, an encouraging sign for the Park’s breeding program and the global Komodo dragon conservation effort.

Native only to a few Indonesian islands, Komodo dragons are listed as Vulnerable on the IUCN Red List, with just 3,000–5,000 remaining in the wild. Threats like habitat loss, climate events, and the scarcity of breeding females make captive breeding programs critically important for the survival of the species.

Now, it’s a waiting game. If all goes well, Daenerys could lay eggs in the next 30 days in a specially designed nest box, and the Park could once again be home to a new generation of Komodo dragons. Learn more about the process in the video below!

In the meantime, visitors can catch a glimpse of both Kraken and Daenerys on display during the Winter Wonderland school holiday events. Alongside these incredible reptiles, guests can enjoy real snowball zones, face painting, and more wintry fun for the whole family.

So whether you're a reptile fanatic, a conservation enthusiast, or just here for the snowballs, there’s never been a better time to visit the Australian Reptile Park and maybe witness a little dragon magic of your own!
