This morning at the Australian Reptile Park, the much-loved wombat joey Bucky became the nation’s most unexpected sports pundit. With a very clear (and very snack-fuelled) choice, the marsupial confidently tipped New South Wales to take out Game 1 of the 2025 State of Origin series — and in doing so, won the hearts of footy fans everywhere.
The setup was simple: two signs — one marked NSW, the other QLD — with generous servings of Bucky’s all-time favourite treat, sweet potato, placed underneath. It was a fun and wholesome challenge organised by Park staff ahead of the big game, but what followed was nothing short of decisive.
Brandon Gifford, the Park’s Operations Manager and Bucky’s devoted hand-raiser, gently placed the young wombat between the signs. There was a pause. A moment of quiet contemplation. A scratch here, a nose twitch there. And then — boom. Like a front-rower charging the line, Bucky barrelled toward the NSW sign, knocked it over in a show of enthusiasm, and tucked into the sweet potato like it was game day and he hadn't eaten in weeks.
Queensland fans, look away.
“The choice was obvious straight away,” Brandon laughed. “He went straight for the NSW sign and devoured all the sweet potato — just like the NSW boys are gonna devour the QLD defensive line tonight!”
And it’s not just his football foresight that has people talking — Bucky’s backstory is just as heartwarming as his on-camera antics.
He arrived at the Park nine months ago after being rescued in the wild. His mum had been injured, and Bucky was found still in her pouch — tiny, vulnerable, and in need of round-the-clock care. Brandon stepped in to hand-raise the little joey, and the bond they’ve formed since is undeniable. Bucky quickly became a favourite among Park staff and visitors, winning everyone over with his playful nature, curious spirit, and his now-signature waddle.
Since then, Bucky’s grown into a happy, healthy young wombat — and clearly, one who’s ready for the spotlight.
Bucky’s bold choice has added a fun twist to the build-up, giving Blues fans one more reason to feel confident ahead of kick-off. With his clear loyalty — and a belly full of sweet potato — New South Wales goes into the clash with an unexpected (and undeniably adorable) edge.
Go the Blues. Bucky’s watching!
